Sounds in Motion is truly one of the most outstanding programs available to today’s early childhood teachers. It is simple to learn and use and it gives a tremendous bang for the buck.
You can watch the video to learn the motions for the 26 letters of the alphabet. Once the children have learned all the motions…it’s time to practice blending the motions into words. This is an invaluable kinesthetic experience for young students, especially those with poor phonemic awareness. You act out the letter sounds for short CVC words, while the students do the motions along with you. Then someone says the word. Have a student come up and whisper a word to him. Then he will act out the word and the others will say what word it is.
Students who are experiencing difficulty acquiring reading skills flourish after learning Sounds In Motion. I use the vowel motions with older kids who still have vowel confusion and after a few sessions their vowel confusion clears up completely.
If your students are having trouble blending phonemes into words Sounds In Motion is a great intervention.
